One killed in WJH fire incident
JOWAI: A person lost his life in a fire incident at Amshipai village under Amlarem sub-division in West Jaintia Hills District on Thursday night. Sources informed that the victim, Yoomiki Marboh, was sleeping inside when his house was gutted. The body was later identified by his relatives.
BJP distributes masks, sanitisers
SHILLONG: Marking the one-year anniversary of Modi 2.0, the state BJP on Wednesday distributed 1,300 face masks, 220 litres of hand sanitisers and 22 hand sanitiser dispensers among 22 police stations, beat houses, outposts, et al., in the city. The distribution programme was graced by state BJP president Ernest Mawrie while it was attended by various other members of the party.
IIM to hold e-symposium
SHILLONG: IIM Shillong will organise an e-symposium on ‘Emergent North East India: Strategic and Developmental Imperatives in Tourism’ on Saturday. IIM said the initiative is the first among a series of e-symposium to cover the progressive work of APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research & Analysis under the aegis of IIM Shillong, which is engaged in policy-related work in development and planning of six critical sectors, viz. logistics, tourism, horticulture, handicraft, handloom and business process outsourcing.
Event to mark day against drug abuse
JOWAI: The West Jaintia Hills District Executive Force, through its anti-narcotics task force (ANTF), kicked off a week-long programme to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday. During the inaugural programme, a short film was released by district police chief, Lakador Syiem in the presence of Additional SP Bijay Chetri and others. Syiem informed that the week-long programme will include various activities like drawing and painting competitions for students.
Youth group members donate blood
JOWAI: The members of Jingiaseng Samla of Jowai Presbyterian Church, through its blood donation cell, on Friday donated blood at the Jowai Blood Bank. The Jingiaseng Samla, youth wing of the Church, formed the blood donation cell in 2008 and has since then helped patients at Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital (Mission hospital), Jowai.
Nod to marriage in places of worship
KHLIEHRIAT: The East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate has permitted marriage rituals in places of worship in the district subject to compliance with the COVID-19 SOP, which states that the number of guests should not exceed one-third capacity of the place of worship and individuals must maintain a minimum distance of 5 feet. Wedding or reception in hotel and marriage halls will be permitted on a case-to-case basis within the overall ceiling of 50 persons as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Plea to exempt rent, power bills
TURA: The shopkeepers of Urban Marketing Hub at Ringrey in Tura on Friday requested the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) to exempt room rent and power bills during the lockdown period beginning from March. In their letter to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TMB, the shopkeepers pointed out that due to no generation of income in view of the shops being closed amid the lockdown, they had resorted to writing a letter to the TMB, which has also been forwarded to the chief minister and the deputy commissioner.
Death of Army jawans condoled
SHILLONG: Members of Marwari Samelan Mahila Samiti, Shillong have condoled the death of Indian soldiers, who were martyred during a clash between the soldiers of India and China recently. The Marwari Samelan Mahila Samiti also requested the citizens of the country to boycott the China-made items.
