Shop owner clears air
SHILLONG: After allegations levelled in a police complaint against three persons, who allegedly retrained customers from entering a shop at Iewduh, Abdul Qayyum, father of the three accused, said that the complainant, Md Hassan, had concealed the facts and held his statement as incorrect. In a statement issued here, Qayyum said that Hassan, who is his brother, has a separate stall at Iewduh but carries on business without a trading license. Interestingly, the two brothers earlier jointly carried out business at a single shop. However, after they split, Hassan continued at a separate establishment in the market calling it a “joint business” without a valid license, the statement said. With regard to obstructing customers to enter the shop, Qayyum said that false statements were issued against his three sons.
Donation to quarantine centres
SHILLONG: The acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Ainam Manik Syiem, on Wednesday, visited the quarantine centres under the Jaiaw Langsning and Jaiaw Laitdom Dorbar and donated Rs 5,000 each to the centres. Langsning has one quarantine centre at Synod College campus while Jaiaw Laitdom has set up the centres at St. Joseph’s School and Seng Khasi School campuses. He lauded the traditional institutions all over the state for coming forward to assist the government at the time of the COVID-19 crisis. He added that he had visited several quarantine centres under Hima Mylliem and was surprised to see the facilities in terms of safety and comfort that the Dorbar Shnong and the COVID management teams have put up at all the centres. Rangbah Shnong of Jaiaw Laitdom, SB Kharbangar and Rangbah Shnong of Jaiaw, Langsning Erland Sun also addressed the gathering, among other members of the dorbar.
Tura Police arrests two for bike theft
TURA: Tura Police has arrested two members of a gang involved in stealing motorcycles in the district. They were arrested from Damal Asim village. Police also recovered two stolen motorcycles from their possession. Meanwhile, in a fresh instance of motorcycle theft, a bike was reported to have been stolen from Chitoktak locality of Tura.
Tribute to martyred soldiers
SHILLONG: Residents of Police Bazar (Ward No.9) paid rich tributes to 20 soldiers who were martyred during clashes with the People’s Liberation Army at Ladakh. They extended condolences to the bereaved families and lauded the soldiers who are patrolling the borders under difficult conditions.
SDO seeks info on transfer of wages
TURA: The Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Dadenggre, has directed the VEC secretaries of Nayagaon, Asikandi and Rajpur villages under Demdema Block in West Garo Hills to submit details with regard to their functioning. The SDO sought to know whether wage money was being transferred to the bank accounts of beneficiaries via direct benefit transfer (DBT). As per the order, the VEC secretaries are to submit the information with proper documentation on or before June 26. The BDO of Demdema has also been intimated to ensure that the VEC officials comply with the order.
MLCU finalist at E-NE Awards
SHILLONG: The Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) Centre for Gender became one of the finalists of the 7th E-North East Awards 2019-2020 in the ‘Peace, Justice & Strong Institution Category’. However, ‘Project Mukti: Freedom from Exploitation of Children and Women from Child Sexual Abuse and Human Trafficking in Manipur’ by FXB India Suraksha bagged the award in the category. Awards were granted in 11 categories, through months-long process of nominations and jury selections. The awards were announced at a plenary session for which the theme was ‘Sustaining the Pursuit of UN Sustainable Development Goals in Post-COVID-19 North East India’.
USTM forms COVID advisory panel
SHILLONG: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has constituted a special ‘COVID-19 Health Advisory Committee’ to chalk out the action plan in terms of safety measures for students, faculties, administrative officials and other staff. Protocols have been designed in the University to provide clear and actionable guidance for safe operations through the prevention, early detection and control of COVID-19 to ensure safety as well as uninterrupted teaching-learning and associated activities in the university campus.
Ri Bhoi market management panel
NONGPOH: The Ri Bhoi district administration constituted the Nongpoh Town Market COVID-19 management committee for regulating all commercial establishment and shopping malls in Nongpoh Town. Shops and establishments will be allowed to open as per arrangements made by the committee in association with the village durbars. The members of the committee include Sylvester Mynsong as chairman and Balajied Syngkli as secretary, besides others.
Winners of short film contest
SHILLONG: Arts and Culture Minister AL Hek on Monday announced the names of the winners of the Stories Of The Hearth 2020, a short film contest, along with president of Shillong Press Club David Laitphlang, over a live digital event curated by The Hillspeople Collective in collaboration with RAC.store (a unit of CR Projects). “The Box” directed by Ronald Kharsyiemlieh won the best film in the Mobile category and Desmond Suting’s “Choices”, a one-man band film, bagged runner up in the mobile category. “Tang Shipor” by Bakmen Lyngdoh won the best film in the professional category and “Iarap” which was directed by Stardiness Kharsyntiew bagged the runners up title. The minister presented the names of the winners live on Instagram which was streamed by Quarion Cine Sicarius. He said, “With so little resources, once again the abundant talent comes to fore in our beautiful state of Meghalaya. It goes to prove that when there is a will and desire to excel, there indeed is a way”.
