Himanta pays obeisance at Kamakhya Temple door with family

GUWAHATI: Senior cabinet minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with his family visited the ancient Kamakhya temple here after the ‘Nibritti’ of annual Ambubachi on Saturday morning.

As the temple door have been kept closed for visitors by the authority this year because of COVID-19 pandemic, the minister and his family comprising wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, who is the CMD of a media organisation that owns two satellite TV channels, son and daughter paid obeisance to the presiding deity from outside the temple door.

The annual Ambubachi ‘mela’ used to receive footfall of several lakhs pilgrims from within the country and outside  every year. However, the famed Ambubachi ‘mela’ in Kamakhya Temple was cancelled this year because of COVID-19 outbreak.

Temple has kept its doors closed for visitors and pilgrims since March 20 last and will remain so till June 30 next after which the temple authority will decide  its future course of action depending on the pandemic situation in the state and the country.
