Trudeau rejects calls to release Huawei CFO
Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has dismissed calls from former parliamentarians and diplomats to release Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who the US accuses of helping the of Chinese telecommunications giant dodge American sanctions on Iran, and unilaterally end her extradition process, it was reported. A group of 19 persons penned a letter to Trudeau this week saying Justice Minister David Lametti should intervene to free Meng. They said Meng’s release would give Canada the chance to “redefine its strategic approach to China”. Meng was arrested at the request of the US. (IANS)

IS militant jailed in UK
London: An Islamic State militant who encouraged mass murder in Germany has been sentenced to at least nine years in prison in Britain. Fatah Abdullah, had been charged under Britain’s terrorism laws with encouraging another person to plow a car into crowds, attack people with a meat cleaver and detonate bombs, “with the aim of killing and/or causing serious injury.” The incitement took place between April and December 2018. Abdullah, who was born in Iran but living in Newcastle after receiving asylum, was arrested after a joint investigation by British and German police. (AP)

Singapore mosques reopen
Singapore: Mosques across Singapore have partially reopened on Friday, months after they were closed due to the pandemic. Muslims in the country were once again allowed to gather for Friday prayers via an online booking system limited to 50 people per session. Worshipers who attended the sessions had to book their slot and were restricted to one of two 30-minute sermons. (IANS)
