GUWAHATI:  In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old girl was buried alive in a rain-triggered landslide in the Kharghuli area of the city on Sunday morning.

Sources said that Priyanka Boro, a final semester postgraduate student of Guwahati College, was engaged in household chores at her residence in Hirimbapur, when a massive chunk of earth came rolling down through the hilly terrain burying her alive.

Her body was later recovered from the debris.

Reportedly, Priyanka was a Sattriya dancer and had showcased her talent on several platforms.

This is the second landslide-related death in the city in the past 48 hours. A 72-year-old woman had succumbed to head injuries following an early morning landslide at her Kahilipara residence here on Friday. Two of her tenants were injured in the incident.

The city has over the past few days witnessed incessant rainfall triggering landslides in several hilly areas, including Kharghuli and Kahilipara.

The Kamrup Metro deputy commissioner had on Saturday appealed to people residing in the vulnerable areas of the district to vacate their houses and shift to safer places till the monsoon season was over as a precautionary measure against rain-triggered landslides.

A landslide behind Raj Bhavan on Saturday also rendered a portion of its guard wall vulnerable. Subsequently, the deputy commissioner issued an order directing the proprietor of a private hospital situated below Raj Bhavan to take immediate measures to shift patients under treatment at the hospital to a nearby hospital.

Another rain-triggered landslide along National Highway 31 at Amingaon snapped communication in the area on Saturday leaving several trucks carrying essentials to the city stranded on the highway for several hours.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel had to be deployed in the area while help had to be sought from the Border Roads Organisation to clear the boulders and debris.
