SHILLONG: The state government has issued advisories asking people not to venture near streams, rivers and waterfalls besides urging them not to drive through flooded areas and stay away from electric poles and power lines.
Heavy rain since the last three days has resulted in damage throughout the district including the capital city.
Shillong and other parts of the state have witnessed heavy rainfall resulting in flood, landslides, damage to electric poles and uprooting of trees.
As per Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), on Wednesday, Shillong witnessed 20.7 mm of rainfall while Sohra received 214.2 mm of rainfall.
The rainfall in Mawsynram was 285.6 mm on the same day.
The rain continued on Thursday and Shillong recorded 44.5 mm while Sohra had 332.1 mm of rainfall. Mawsynram recorded 329.4 mm of rainfall.
On Saturday, Shillong received 167.6 mm of rainfall while Sohra recorded 495.0 mm of rainfall. Mawsynram on the same day had 659.6 mm of rainfall.
Officials from the IMD said that incessant rain is because of monsoon and rain is likely to continue for another two days.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, MW Nongbri said several damages have been reported throughout the district including many landslides and collapse of retaining walls. Flooding was also reported in Mawsynram area.
Nongbri said that District Disaster Management Authority is on the job since Wednesday and even the State Disaster Response Force and Incidence Response Teams are working in every block.
So far, no loss of life has been reported from the district.
