SHILLONG: With torrential rains posing a risk to the residents of Pynthorbah and affecting the farmlands in Langkyrding and Pynthor, a delegation of traditional heads from Pynthorumkhrah led by local MDC PN Syiem met Water Resources Minister Brolding Nongsiej on Monday to discuss the matter.
Syiem said that the downpour during summers and even winter rains that last for 15-20 minutes is a threat to the residents in Langkyrding, Nongmynsong and Pynthor.
“Residents are also forced to leave their homes even at 1 am to prevent any impending danger due to the heavy rain,” he said, adding that the constant flood is very dangerous.
Syiem said that Nongsiej informed them about a scheme initiated by the government from the Ministry of Water Resources called the Pynthorumkhrah Flood Control Protection Project.
However, the guidelines of the Ministry require huge land and the government is currently examining the scheme.
“There is also the river rejuvenation committee as directed by the NGT constituted for Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi,” Syiem said.
The MDC said that the minister was suggested to convene a meeting of the committee so that departments will give their advice.
