Guwahati has entered COVID-19 pandemic stage: Himanta

GUWAHATI:  The city of Guwahati under Kamrup Metropolitan district has now entered into real pandemic stage of COVID-19 and that demands tremendous patience, cooperation and resilience on part of the citizens to defeat the threat from the disease.

In this backdrop, Assam Health Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today made an earnest appeal to the citizens of Guwahati to strictly adhere to the lockdown protocols till July 12. He did not ruling out the requirement of further extension of the lockdown if the number of COVID-19 positive patients detected per day in the city doesn’t come down after July 9.

The minister informed that total 2741 COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in the city during the last ten days till July 4 and all are due to community transmission which only confirms that the city is now in real pandemic stage. He informed that 125 more positive cases were detected in the city till the time of his media briefing today.

During last 10 days 304 positive cases were detected in Nagaon, 223 in Sonitpur and 110 in Darrang.

As many as 1202 positive cases were detected in Assam on July 4 and out of those 782 were detected in Kamrup Metropolitan district while 68 in Marigaon, 61 in Nagaon and 40 in Kamrup (Rural) district.

The minister further informed that Assam which has so far carried out over 4.55 lakh tests for COVID-19, will soon complete five lakh tests.

“According to data relreased by NITI Aayog’s  CEO, Amitabh Kant, Assam is now in 4th place among all the states in the country in respect of number of tests (13471) conducted per million population,” the minister informed.
