SHILLONG: The MDC of Rambrai Constituency, Bajop Pyngrope, has suggested the government to resort to aggressive testing for COVID-19 while lashing out at the MDA coalition’s “mismanagement” of the situation.
Public opinion shows that a vast majority agree with the Congress that the MDA government mismanaged the COVID-19 situation in the state, the MDC said in a statement issued here on Friday.
Pyngrope said that the government should ensure strict implementation of the steps for safer socialising of the public and aggressive testing as “only 0.83 per cent of the state’s population has been tested as of July23″.
“Safer socialising and testing is a must in order to contain the spread of coronavirus as it spreads rapidly and easily. The full spectrum of symptoms and health effects is only just the beginning to be catalogued, much less understood by experts”, the MDC said.
On the other hand, the Rambrai MDC said the government’s mismanagement of the COVID situation was on two counts — the BSF’s and the attendants of the wedding parties.
“While the Border Security Force (BSF) initially did not adhere to the protocol/SOPs of the pandemic, the government was a mute spectator on their entry into the state,” the MDC said, adding that attendants of the wedding party at Greenwood Resort, Khanapara, as well as attendants of another wedding party, who returned from Bihar, are significantly responsible for the surge in COVID cases in the state.
“The government was helpless and was found wanting for its negligence,” he added.
The recovery rate as of July 9 was 32 per cent while active cases were 67 per cent. The recovery rate was again reduced to 14 per cent while the active cases increased to over 85 per cent, he said.
“On the other hand, sample test positivity rate went up from 0.65 per cent on July 9 to 1.36 per cent in July 13. If this is not mismanagement then what is?” the MDC said.
