Assam flood toll climbs to 108

GUWAHATI: One more flood-related death was reported from Mikirbheta revenue circle in Morigaon district in the past 24 hours, taking the overall toll to 108, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority informed on Thursday evening.

The population affected by the current wave of floods however has come down to 12.01 lakh across 22 districts, of which about 3.5 lakh are affected in Goalpara district, followed by Morigaon (2.34 lakh).

The population hit by the deluge in Dhubri district has come down to 1.51 lakh while the situation in South Salmara improved further with tabout 91,000 remaining affected in the district.

The Brahmaputra however continues to flow above danger level in Jorhat, Sonitpur and Dhubri districts, the Central Water Commission reported on Thursday morning.

Rescue and relief operations by National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are underway in the flood-hit districts. Six boats were deployed by State Disaster Response Force to evacuate 31 persons to safer places in Dhemaji district on Thursday.

On the other hand, the flood-related death toll of animals at Kaziranga National Park has gone up to 143 even as the water level has receded to an extent with just 21 of the 223 camps remaining inundated.

The flood situation at Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park too has improved drastically with just three of the 40 camps set up at the park currently inundated.

Meanwhile, severe erosion continues unabated in Sonitpur district as three houses were on the brink of being washed away at Koroyani Chapori.

River erosion has also affected areas in Lakhimpur and Biswanath, two districts which the chief minister recently visited and took stock of the situation.
