SHILLONG: With the uptrend in the use of online services due to the COVID-19-induced lockdown, cases of scamming and duping have been on the rise in the city.
In this regard, the police have advised the public to be cautious while responding to attractive offers online.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the police said that “in recent cases, relating to Amazon Pay Gift Card, the scammers had sent emails to some people masquerading as head of the institutions, departments etc, asking them to buy the gift cards and send them to a legitimate-looking email address, only for victims to realise that they have been duped”.
The police suggested the people to visit the nearest police station or call 100 before entertaining the requests in such emails.
