SHILLONG: As e-learning or online learning continues to occupy a significant part in the education scenario in recent times due to the COVID-19 situation, a city college has raised the bar slightly higher by means of unconventional e-teaching methods, devised by the respective teachers, besides engaging the students under counselling programme so as to ensure their mental well-being.
The college — Sankardev College — has exclusively designed an e-learning portal for the students using its own website.
One of the teachers, Ruth I Kharbamon of the Sociology Department, resorting to a Power Point Presentation (PPT) comprising illustrations and videos.
Another teacher — Dr R Nongrum of the Chemistry Department — used selfie videos to provide a more creative sense of learning deducing and explaining to students using a camera phone on a sheet of paper.
On the other hand, teachers like Kenneth Chyne of the Zoology Department used the e-learning portal for an interactive mode of teaching involving simultaneous reactions from both students and teachers, while Hilda L Mawlong of the Botany Department created a blackboard classroom experience through explanatory videos shot in the college classroom.
The college has appointed a counsellor to deal with the emotional state and well-being of the students, Principal of the College, Dr EFP Lyngdoh, said.
Meanwhile, the college, under the initiative ‘COVID 19 Tagline’, has encouraged students to showcase their talents and creativity through various means.
The college is ready to publish a magazine called ‘Reflections’ which comprises activities under this extra-curricular exercise, entries to which have been posted on social media.
