TURA: Locals from different village employment councils in the plains of West Garo Hills have petitioned the government to file cases against corrupt VEC secretaries, who had reportedly siphoned off funds and accused some block officials of deliberately delaying action.
In one such case, villagers from Gandhimari have urged the SDO, Sayid Fakruddin Hamid, to remove their secretary over alleged involvement in permitting dual job card holders to gain more access to funds for MGNREGA works.
The list reportedly included 23 dual job card holders in their village, 35 in another village as well as 13 other names of people, who had already passed away. Also, two relatives of the VEC secretary, who belong to another village, have been included in the Gandhimari job card list.
Some VEC secretaries are allegedly known to present bloated lists of job card holders in order to avail more MGNREGA projects and siphon off funds in the names of dead people and dual identity card holders.
