GUWAHATI: The Assam Advisory Committee, a 16-member advisory committee formed last month to help chalk out a roadmap for protecting the interests of Assam and the future of its people, has submitted its recommendations to the All Assam Students’ Union and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad.
The two influential students’ organisations, AASU and AYJCP, which are currently spearheading the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement in Assam, announced the constitution of the panel on August 19.
The advisory panel comprised prominent personalities including former Asam Sahitya Sabha president, Nagen Saikia and writer, Arup Kumar Dutta as advisers while former Meghalaya Governor, Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary and acclaimed filmmaker, Jahnu Baruah were among the group of four conveners.
“The Assam Advisory Committee, which we had constituted last month to help chart out a roadmap to protect the academic, social, economic and political interests of the people of Assam, has submitted its final report,” AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi told reporters here on Wednesday.
“Based on the recommendations, both AASU and AYJCP, will in the coming days, analyse and examine various aspects before we take the next step. We wholeheartedly thank the committee for their recommendations,” Gogoi said.
He however did not hint at the formation of any regional party by the organisations in the near future even as speculations are rife, particularly with the Assembly polls to be held in less than a year’s time.
AJYCP general secretary, Palash Changmai said that the committee was formed to give shape to the future course of the movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Assam.
“Besides delving into aspects like socio-economic development, we are also going to look at other issues. Now that we have the panel’s suggestions, we will make them known soon and try to implement them at the earliest,”Changmai said.
