Committee takes stock of environmental impact

TURA: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Committee on Environment led by its Chairman and MLA, S K Sunn, along with other members including MLAs Himalaya Shangpliang, Miani D Shira, Kimfa S Marbaniang, Rakkam Sangma and co-opted member, Garland Star Swet, on Wednesday visited various sand mining sites, brick kilns and stone quarries in South West Garo Hills district to take stock of the environmental impact of the activities.
Among the places visited by the committee were the sand mining sites at damalgre, brick kilns at Garobadha area and stone quarries at Zekabari.
During a brief meeting with villagers and brick kiln owners in Garobadha area, the Committee discussed various environmental concerns regarding emissions and other byproducts of the activity.
The Committee had on Tuesday visited various sites under Tura Municipal areas to take stock of the environmental scenario in the town. The places visited by the committee included the dumping ground at Rongkhon Songgital, Tura Super Market, Nakam Bazar and various streams of the town.
