The announcement for the “highest one-time investment on infrastructure development in the state so far” comes just about seven months ahead of the Assembly polls.

Assam finance minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said work on the projects would start before December 2020.

Addressing the media here on Saturday, Sarma said four new medical colleges would be set up in Charaideo, Biswanath, Goalpara besides another medical college, which will be the biggest in eastern India having 1300 beds, will be set up in Guwahati.

“The Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) would be combined with Kalapahar TB Hospital for the city’s second medical college. The 12-storey hospital facing the Brahmaputra would be more advanced than Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. A sum of Rs 2050 crore has been approved for the four medical colleges,” Sarma said.

The minister said that nine degree colleges for women would be set up at an investment of Rs 303.3 crore and work would begin in the next 45 days.

“Six new degree colleges (at a cost of Rs 100 crore) and 10 new law colleges (Rs 33 core) will be set up in the next two months,” he said.
