SHILLONG: The 36th foundation day of All India Mahila Congress was observed by the members of Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress. The women’s wing of Congress was founded on September 15, 1984.

Speaking to a section of the Press, president of the state Congress wing, Joplin Shylla said, “The women leaders felt that women should be active in politics and formed the All India Mahila Congress”.

The 36th foundation day was not observed in the office of Congress Bhavan due to COVID-19 spread.

About the participation of women in politics, Shylla said women in the Congress party are very enthusiastic as there are several members up to the unit and block level. Shillong city has 7 blocks which has 30-40 members and East Khasi Hills district has over 12-13 blocks.

“Women enthusiastically participate in politics and they play an important role such as in holding awareness programmes for drug abuse, programmes to sensitise women, promote the use of sanitary pads. Again, there are different cells in the women’s wing that look after different issues,” Shylla said.

She said that Congress has produced women politicians such as former ministers Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister Roshan Warjri and Deborah Marak and current MLA Dikkanchi Shira. She said that the Congress has always encouraged women to participate in politics.
