TURA: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s recent declaration of support for the demand for a Gorkhaland State in West Bengal has ignited a spark closer to home with the GSMC raising the question when the Chief Minister would lend his support for the Garoland State demand.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, Co-Chairman of the GSMC, Balkarin Marak said that the movement supports the demand of the Gorkhas just like the Chief Minister but that Conrad should first deal with issues closure to home.
“The Chief Minister has openly declared his support for the Garkhaland State and even written to the concerned government. We have been demanding a separate Garoland State for ages and submitted a number of memorandums on the issue to the Chief Minister. If he can give his support outside the state, why is it that he is yet to do the same towards the demand of his own people?” Balkarin said.
Balkarin reminded that achieving a separate Garoland state was also among the many dreams of late P A Sangma and urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to take over the reins and take steps
to finish what his late father left behind.
“Till now, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is yet to speak out on the Garoland State demand. If he were to spearhead the demand and achieve the goal, he would be remembered as the greatest freedom fighter of all among the Garos,” Balkarin said.
