Local heads want govt to make MCCL functional

SHILLONG: The Executive Dorbar, Mawmluh Sirdarship, has suggested that the state government should continue to run Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL), which happens to be a state-owned cement company.
Lamenting the government negligence towards the company, the Executive Dorbar, in a statement, said that the government should think about the welfare of the people.
“The government’s reluctance to revive the company is apparent, nay evident in its continued patronising of the CGM; in the absence of any enquiry commission into the spiralling of its own fund pumped for the existing plant and the expansion plant that did not materialise into success but dwindled into this shameful fiasco; in its seemingly utter lack of concern for the workers who are left in the dark about their own future,” the statement said.
The Executive Dorbar also said that the government had convened a meeting in July albeit no decision was taken.
However, it was informed to the stakeholders that the government has left no stones unturned to make the factory run.
Stating that the MCCL came to a deplorable mess because of mismanagement, the Executive Dorbar said that the government had claimed that the money required to revive the company will be whopping Rs 190 crore.
“It (government) said that a whopping Rs 190 crore was needed if MCCL had to be revived, taking into consideration the liabilities, pending salaries, and immediate maintenance and repair of machineries,” the statement said.
To this, the Dorbar said that to start running the plant again, Rs 190 crore is not needed.
“The government will go on riding its hobby horse about the scarcity of fund. Does it not have money only now or will it never have money till the end of its term? Things are blown out of proportion. It is a popular and not a baseless belief by all parties concerned that a maximum of Rs 35 to 40 crore is sufficient to kick-start the plant again. Outstanding dues to outside parties can be time negotiated and even workers are ready to protract their own suffering once they know there is hope again for their future,” the statement read.
