Berlin: Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways and secured its second win of the season after Erling Haaland provided a brace to see off Freiburg 4-0 in the third round of the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Freiburg staged a well-positioned defense from the kickoff and was able to keep Lucien Favre’s men on the distance in the opening stage.
Dortmund pressed forward but had to wait until the 31st minute before the good build-up work and pass into the box from Giovanni Reyna allowed Haaland to break the deadlock with a hammer from close range. The “BVB” controlled possession and should have added another goal to its lead before the break but Freiburg’s goalkeeper Florian Muller was on guard to defuse the efforts from Thomas Meunier and Mats Hummels in the closing period of the first half.
After the restart, Dortmund started where it left off and doubled the lead two minutes into the second half as Reyna’s pinpoint corner kick found Emre Can, who nodded home the ball over Muller.
The host squandered a promising chance after Axel Witsel failed to make the most out of Reyna’s cutback pass into the penalty area.
The 17-year-old assist-giver remained in the thick of things as Reyna’s through ball met Haaland, who drilled his brace from the edge of the box into the top left corner with 66 minutes played.
Favre’s men were still not done with the scoring and added a fourth goal after Haaland assisted Felix Passlack for his first Bundesliga goal in the dying seconds of the encounter.
With the result, Dortmund now sits third in the table, whereas Freiburg suffered its first defeat and slipped to the 11th spot.
Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1. (PTI)
