MAWKYRWAT: Ever envisaged a situation where the health workers, who have been acting as a shield to safeguard people from the menace of COVID-19, be poked mullock at by the same ones? Such an incident, in an unfortunate turn of events, has come to light from South West Khasi Hills.
A handful of people in South West Khasi Hills were not only uncooperative but had also ridiculed the health workers when the latter were conducting random COVID-19 tests.
District Surveillance Officer, SWKH, Dr W Nary informed that the incident took place at Balat Market under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division on Friday when the health workers were conducting random COVID-19 tests at the market area. It was during that time some locals came and unreasonably intervened in the process and mocked the health workers.
Stating that only 17 people came forward for the COVID-19 test, Dr Nary said, “With positive cases being reported from Balat Market, we had no option but to contain the market. I have informed the DC that we need to contain and close down the market until the people decide to cooperate for COVID-19 test”.
The DSO also informed that he will on Monday send a team to Balat Market anew along with the zonal magistrates, sector officers and the police so that the test is successfully conducted.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner has declared the Meghalaya Rural Bank, Mawkyrwat Branch and Balat Market under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division as containment areas subsequent to the detection of new positive cases on Saturday.
