SHILLONG: Latest to join the chorus of raising alarm over uranium issue is Khun Hynniewtrep Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, who has expressed concern over the reported leakage of uranium and its compound causing health hazard in South West Khasi Hills.
He questioned if the state has to wait for major disasters and calamities to occur in order to understand how this drive for Uranium could jeopardise mankind. “Such a leakage and handling of Uranium without safety protocols at the cost of present and future generations has been a curse to the people and the state,” he said.
Adelbert further stated that the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) and the state government will have to be made accountable if any disaster takes place, and that they should be forced to compensate and redress the issue.
“It is wake-up call for the state government and responsible citizens to stand together for safeguarding our rights by not allowing such experiment on our resources,” he said.
