SHILLONG: Weeks after an 84-year-old, nay the oldest COVID-19 patient from state succeeded in overwhelming the virus, another octogenarian now has now successfully recovered.
A statement from Nodal Officer & Spokesperson, Bethany Hospital, said that the octogenarian, who was discharged on Thursday, was admitted on October 5 with complaints of fever, cough, breathing (difficulty, body ache, sore throat, vomiting and abdominal pain.
On evaluation, the woman, who also had comorbid conditions, was found to have respiratory distress, low oxygen saturation and was tested positive for COVID-19. Her HRCT Thorax showed COVID pneumonia features.
The statement said that she was put on high-flow oxygen support for the first 7 days and other treatment as per protocol, following which her health improved, and on the Day 10, she finally tested negative for COVID-19.
“It’s been fantastic to see our patients recover. It is nice to see our patients leave our ward after having beaten this virus. This recovery story offers a powerful reminder to all of us that people of all ages, even with comorbidities, can survive coronavirus if detected and treated at early stage. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment are keys to providing a better outcome for patients with COVID-19,” the statement said.
Only last month, two patients – a sexagenarian and an octogenarian – with comorbid conditions won a victory over COVID-19.
