NONGSTOIN: Villagers of Mawrang under Rambrai, West Khasi Hills, have moved BDO of Nongstoin C&RD Block over misuse of MGNREGA scheme by the VEC members of the village.
In a complaint to the BDO, the villagers said that the embezzlement of the scheme came to light after a social audit was held in the village recently where the villagers, who attended the social audit, found out that the implementation of the scheme was done only in papers.
“It was during the social audit that we came to know that MGNREGA is being misused and being manipulated by the VEC members,” one of the job card holders alleged.
Albeit the villagers, after the social audit, sought clarification from the VEC members, they were told that the team of auditors misled the villagers and that such an allegation is baseless.
The villagers also alleged that the VEC members never assigned work to the job card holders even when they wanted to work.
Shimti Sohshang, a resident of Block III in Mawrang village, bewailed that there are no developmental works implemented in their locality (Block-III), not even a footpath. Yet, they were told to withdraw the money from their bank account and deliver it to the VEC members.
Meanwhile, the BDO Nongstoin C&RD Block, CP Mawkon, has said that the matter is now under inquiry.
