Tura, Nov 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is arriving in Tura tomorrow to review the Covid situation in the light of recent spike in cases leading to loss of seven lives in the town in less than ten days.
“A review meeting on Covid will be taking place which will be attended by the chief minister,” confirmed West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh.
The number of infections across Tura town and the sudden surge in mortality had compelled authorities to clamp down by way of micro-containment zones at Dobasipara and Cherangre, where most of the cases were reported.
The review meeting is scheduled to take place at the residence of Tura MP Agatha K Sangma and the chief minister will also be attending a programme at Harding Theological College in Edenbari, the same day.
Meanwhile, health and Covid surveillance teams are continuing their door-to-door contact tracing at several localities of the town. Last week, health teams undertook surveillance of four areas in the town, including Lower Chandmari, Chitoktak, RC Road and Cherangre leading to micro containment of the latter.
On Tuesday, four additional areas with a highly dense population have been added to the ILI/SARI door to door surveillance.
The localities of Modynagar, Hawakhana, Sepoy Colony and Mahendra Colony have begun the screening process for the disease.
“So far, apart from Cherangre, other areas are doing fine. Both Cherangre and Dobasipara have been demarcated and made smaller. As per new guidelines the containment will be for 14 days if cases are high,” mentioned Ram Singh.
The infection rates have not centered in Tura alone with new infections being detected in other parts of Garo Hills, also.
Remote Siju region of South Garo Hills district witnessed a spike in Covid cases in the last three days compelling district authorities to impose a lockdown of the Siju area to try and contain the spread of infection.
