6th MLP Bn expresses gratitude for support to social act
SHILLONG, Dec 22: The 6th MLP Battalion has expressed gratitude to the ones who extended their supported to the programme ‘Reaching Out – Beyond The Call of Duty’. It has, in a statement, also thanked the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner for supporting the initiative. The 6th MLP Battalion had started the initiative since December and had distributed numerous blankets among locals from different villages. With people getting au courant with the programme, donations started pouring in. Till date, the police personnel have been able to reach out to 29 villages in and around the Battalion HQ, few villages in other districts and a village on the Meghalaya-Assam border.

State entrepreneur awarded
SHILLONG, Dec 22: Meghalaya-based entrepreneur, Mark Laitflang Stone, has clinched the NorthEast Young Heroes Awards in the category of Education. The NorthEast Young Heroes Awards premiered on Tuesday and more than 150 nominations for 10 different fields, which include healthcare, administration and tourism, were filed. An elated Mark recalled that although it was a tough journey, he remained committed to his task to help the young tribal boys and girls of North East unlock their true potential.

Regulation on bursting crackers
JOWAI, Dec 22: The West Jaintia Hills District Magistrate has directed one and all to burst firecrackers between 11.55 pm and 12.30 am during Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The District Magistrate, in its directive, “prohibited sale, purchase and procurement of foreign-made firecrackers, use of joined firecrackers (series crackers or laris) which cause huge air, noise and solid waste problems, use of firecrackers generating noise level exceeding 125dB(A1)or 145dB (C) Pk at four-metre distance from point of bursting and bursting of firecrackers within 100 meters of hospital, nursing homes, primary and district health care centre, educational intuitions, courts, religious places or any other areas which may have been declared as silent zone by the concerned authorities.”

IMFL shops closed
NONGPOH, Dec 22: The Deputy Commissioner (Excise) of Ri Bhoi has ordered the closure of all IMFL retail shops, bars in hotels, bonded warehouses, bottling units, breweries, distilleries, country made spirit shops, outstills, canteens etc., the district on the December 25 and January 1 on account of Christmas and New Year Day respectively.

Concern over notification on ST status
SHILLONG, Dec 22: A group of citizens has expressed their opposition to a notification of the Social Welfare department that seeks to issue Schedule Tribe (ST) certificate to indigenous people who take the father’s surname. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, one Banshai Marbaniang, said, “We find it unacceptable and these are thoughts of people from outside the state”. He said that the group will meet the state government and the Autonomous District Council of Khasi and Jaintia Hills with a request to look into the matter.

Three-day webinar on education
SHILLONG, Dec 22: A three-day webinar (JIGNYASA 2020 regional level) based on United National Sustainable Development Goal was organised by Agastya International Foundation, an Indian education trust and NGO, from December 17 to 19 and live-streamed on YouTube. Naomi Thapa (Class VIII) and Ripa Das (Class VI) from St Nanak UP School, Pynthorumkhrah, participated in the webinar and interacted on the topic ‘Stop the gender play gap’.

Natl Mathematics Day observed
SHILLONG, Dec 22: As part of the National Mathematics Day celebration, the State Council of Science & Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya, participated in a webinar hosted by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bengaluru, on ‘National Mathematics Day’, which was delivered by renowned mathematician Prof CR Pradeep, IISc, Bengaluru. The Maths Ambassadors catalysed by this Council took part in the webinar. The central government declared December 22 as the National Mathematics Day to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Indian mathematical genius, Srinivasa Ramanujan.
