NONGPOH, Jan 2: The Khasi Students’ Union, Eastern Border Area, has rejected the allegations levelled by the headman of Syllei-U-Lar, who had earlier claimed that the KSU president, Banjop Maring, and in-charge of Khapmara Police Outpost, Amit Sinha, had threatened and abused him.
The headman, Kronding Nongbsap, had on December 30 accused the two of abusing him when the former was questioning the police for allowing overladen vehicles to ply on the Dwar-Ksuid Bridge on Shillong Bypass. Nongbsap had also registered a complaint against the duo at Umiam Police Station.
A police complaint was also registered against the headman by one of the carrier firms for allegedly threatening the handyman and the trucker.
Talking to this scribe on Saturday, Maring debunked the claims while calling it “baseless”.
“On December 30, Kronding Nongbsap along with HPF president, Apbor Nongrum, and others went to Dwarksuid Bridge of Umroi Bypass and stopped all vehicles including those transporting cement, rice straw, logs and others, while giving an excuse that the movement of these vehicles will affect the bridge. Therefore, on knowing this, I went and urged them to not stop these vehicles as it will create traffic snarls and affect the smooth movement of vehicles,” Maring said.
He further alleged that truckers, who pay the headman, were allowed to proceed while those, who did not make the payment, were asked to return back.
“It is quite shocking and surprising that when I had gone to intervene into the matter, I was asked to provide them a share, just because I have a plot of land near the Dwarksuid Bridge, which was used for heavy vehicles to unload the transporting items and reload them on small vehicles so that they can ply through the bridge as per the Transport department’s order,” Maring said.
The KSU leader said that despite taking law into his own hands, Nongbsap had the gall to file a police complaint. “Who gave Nongbsap and the HPF leaders the authority to stop vehicles? If they knew there is some illegality going on, they should have informed the concerned authority and not to take the law into their own hands,” Maring said.
With regard to the complaint against Sinha, the KSU leader said that Nongbsap’s intention was to malign the Police department.
