Man tied to tree, burnt to death
Angul (Odisha), Jan 13: A 25-year-old man was burnt to death in Odisha’s Angul district allegedly by his relatives for regularly creating nuisance after getting drunk, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening at Kadalimunda village falling under Handapa police station limits, they said. According to locals, the man was tied to a tree and set on fire after sprinkling petrol on him, a senior officer said.
He was taken to a state-run hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Pradhan’s body has been sent for postmortem, the officer said, adding that further investigation is underway. (PTI)

Minors detained for vehicle thefts
Mumbai, Jan 13: Two minors have been detained for allegedly stealing 47 vehicles in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district and selling them to make a quick buck, police said on Wednesday.
The Dahisar police here nabbed the boys, both aged 17, when they were travelling in a stolen autorickshaw in Borivali on Tuesday, an official said.
Investigations have revealed that the duo had stolen 47 vehicles, including autorickshaws, two-wheelers and sports cycles, for joyrides and later sold them to make a quick buck, the official said.
The boys, who are residents of Malwani area, have given the names of four men to whom they sold the stolen vehicles, he said, adding that further probe is underway. (PTI)

IndiGo plane gets stuck in snow
New Delhi, Jan 13: An IndiGo plane heading to take off for Delhi got stuck in snow that was accumulated near the taxiway at the Srinagar airport on Wednesday.
In a statement, the airline said it has held the aircraft at the Srinagar airport for further inspections, and an alternative flight was arranged to Delhi to accommodate all the affected passengers. The brand new A321neo plane VT-IUZ had joined the airline’s fleet last month.
“IndiGo flight 6E 2559 operating from Srinagar to New Delhi was held back at Srinagar. While taxiing out, the aircraft came in close contact with the snow which was accumulated adjacent to the taxiway,” the airline added. (PTI)

Major blaze at Kolkata slum
Kolkata, Jan 13: A major fire broke out at a slum in Kolkata’s Bagbazar area on Wednesday evening, officials said. At least 24 fire tenders were pressed into service as the blaze engulfed several houses in the slum on Kshirode Vidyavinode Avenue beside the Bagbazar Women’s College near the Chitpore Lock Gate Bridge, they said.
Blasts were heard in the slum which police suspect to be of gas cylinders at the houses on fire, officials said. There were no reports of any casualty as most of the people were evacuated on time, they said.
The blaze also spread to the adjacent Sarada Mayer Bari as the firefighters escorted the saints out, an officer of the fire department said.
“The reason for the fire is not yet known. The firemen are fighting it tooth and nail and hopefully, it will soon be under control. We have emptied the entire area. There were several blasts, which could be because of the gas cylinders,” a senior officer of the Kolkata Police said. (PTI)
