SHILLONG, Feb 6: Congress legislator from Rangsakona, Zenith Sangma on Saturday said people should refrain from mining coal as long as it is not done scientifically.
“If there is a coal deposit, it is not going to vanish. We must wait till we are in a position to mine scientifically,” Sangma said referring to the devastating effects of coal mining on the environment in the state, especially the Lukha river which had turned blue upstream and yellow downstream.
The Congress legislator said it is his personal opinion and not that of the party as he himself is an environment enthusiast.
He said in trying to fulfill greed, some people are destroying the environment, forest, soil, water and aquatic life.
“It has multi-pronged negative ramifications. We should be responsible enough to protect the environment,” he insisted.
