SHILLONG, Feb 22: The Rotary Club of Shillong recently supplied, installed and commissioned two sets of manually operated sanitary pad vending machines at two schools in the city.
Sanctioned under the District Grant 2019-2020 of the Rotary International, the machines were installed at St Joseph Higher Secondary School, Pynthorbah, and Sacred Heart Girls Higher Secondary School, Mawlai.
Each sanitary pad vending machine contains about 25 biodegradable sanitary pads which can be dispensed by putting a five rupee coin.
Along with the sanitary vending machine, there is also an incinerator that can incinerate the used/soiled sanitary pad.
Considering that the topic on health, hygiene and menstruation amongst adolescent girls is usually not conferred about and considered a taboo in certain parts of the country, the Rotary Club of Shillong, with the support of the Rotary International District 3240, has paved the way for more such innovations in future, provided this move is successful.
