JOWAI, March 2: Two students’ body — Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) — along with residents of Mynkrem, Shangpung village in West Jaintia Hills, have expressed strong opposition to the proposal of setting up of coke factory in Shangpung village.
A public meeting was held in the village during which the stakeholders adopted the resolution to oppose construction of the aforesaid factories.
KSU Secretary Shangpung Unit, Lutmon Sungoh, informed that the factory will have a detrimental effect on the environment in the entire area. It also pointed out that the smoke from the factories would affect the health of public, while wastes from such units would also contaminate the water. Sungoh suggested that the state government should come up with projects which will have no negative impact on people’s health and the environment.
