NONGPOH, March 4: An angry mob on Thursday afternoon roughed up a man who had allegedly snatched a bag containing money belonging to one woman after she exited from an ATM booth at Mawsmai village in Ri Bhoi.
The man, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was badly injured after the thrashing.
Sources said that the lady and her son were coming out of the ATM when two persons onboard a bike (AS 01 EN 8549) arrived out of the blue and snatched the bag.
Prompt action of the son, who hurled a stone on the fleeing bikers, took down one of the duo, who was beaten by public black and blue after he fell off of the bike. However, the other miscreant fled the scene.
The apprehended biker was later taken to Khanapara Police Station for enquiry but in view of the injuries, he was shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment.
It was learned that such incidents of snatching are common in the area. Theft cases of similar nature have occurred several times at the SBI ATM in Mawsmai village.
