The District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills, in an order under Section 144 CrPC, has directed all trucks ferrying fly ash/clinker via NH-6 to cover the materials with suitable tarpaulin so as to prevent dust particles emanating from the vehicles. The order has also prohibited dumping of fly ash/clinker along the national highway. Violation of the order will entail penalty, the order stated.

Condolence
The former members of the Students’ Welfare Association (SWA), Laban, held a gathering on Monday on the premises of Zenith Jubelieth Club, Laban, and condoled the demise of Niyanta Purkayastha, an ex-member of SWA, who passed away on March 4 at Guwahati. During the gathering, the former Association members recalled Purkayastha’s contribution to the SWA and the society, particularly youths. A two-minute silence was also held.

Illicit liquor raid
The Excise department, East Khasi Hills, recently conducted raids at restaurants and stalls in the city and its outskirts and seized 234.400 litre of illicitly distilled liquor and 317.140 litre of Indian-made foreign liquor in January. In this connection, 14 were arrested.

Rally
The District Legal Services Authority, East Jaiñtia Hills, in collaboration with the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and District Transport Officer, will organise a rally on safety driving habits on March 13. According to a statement, the rally will be organised with an objective to disseminate awareness on safe driving habits and to strictly adhere to the guidelines under the Motor Vehicle Act. “The rally will start from Mookhep at around 8am till Byndihati and the programme will end at Khliehriat Higher secondary school,” the statement said. A free eye check-up, slogan and essay competition for students, et al, will also be organised on the day.
