Over 120 kg of contraband seized
SHILLONG, March 12: Police on Thursday evening intercepted two Guwahati-bound vehicles and seized contraband weighing 120.475 kg. According to a statement on Friday, the police, after receiving a tip-off about suspected drug smuggling, set up a naka check at Mawryngkneng. Subsequently, the joint team of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and Mawryngkneng police intercepted two vehicles and conducted search. It was during the search, the police team recovered 57 packets and 67 packets of marijuana from vehicles bearing registration numbers AS-01-EK-2105 and AS-01-EL-8415 respectively. “The total weight of the illegal contraband is found to be 120.475 kg. It is gathered that the consignment from Tripura was to be delivered in Guwahati,” the statement from the police said. Meanwhile four people, namely, Rajkumar Rai (29), Jahidul Islam (31), Hiralal Ray (30) and Lakshman Kumar Singh (43) have been arrested in this connection.
CBI finds ‘incriminating’ items
SHILLONG, March 12: The anti-corruption branch of CBI, on Friday, searched the office premises of ENVIS Resource Partner Centre, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and unearthed “incriminating documents” such as list of students under two courses — Waste Management and Environmental Laws — and application of students, which were seized by the investigating agency. The raids were conducted in connection with corruption cases against Dinesh Bhatia, Associate Professor, NEHU, and R Mangkara Karl Lyngrah, Finance Officer, NEHU. CBI has also seized the photocopy of an account opened by Dinesh Bhatia in the name of ‘ENVIS RP Centre, NEHU, Shillong correspondence, related to sanction and release of funds by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change etc. Various increment bills have also been seized along with other documents. The CBI Shillong had last month registered cases against the two officials Dinesh Bhatia and R Mangkara Karl Lyngrah for allegedly submitting forged bill to the tune of around Rs 11 lakh under Waste Management Project funded by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The search warrant was issued by Special Court for PC Act cases, the CBI said, adding that investigation of the case is under way.
Convocation
SHILLONG, March 12: The 89th convocation of departments of computer training and language training was organised at the auditorium of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Shillong. According to a statement, the convocation was attended by Regional Director Indian Council for Cultural Relations, N Munish Singh. During the convocation, the result of the 89th session of computer training was declared and students were conferred with awards and certificates.
Unclaimed body
SHILLONG, March 12: A highly decomposed male body was on Monday recovered from a jungle at Mawiong, Block 4. Accordingly, inquest was done and the body was sent to Shillong Civil Hospital for autopsy. The body has, meanwhile, been kept at the hospital morgue for claim. According to a police statement, the deceased is aged between 35-40 years and is approximately 5.7-ft tall. He was found wearing blue track-like pant and v-neck t-shirt (light green).

SHILLONG, March 12: The Shillong Socio-cultural Assamese Students’ Association (SSASA) has condoled the demise of APS officer, Parboti Bhattacharyya, who passed away on Friday. In a statement, the Association said that Bhattacharyya had actively participated in all Assamese cultural affairs.
