Cleaning drive at Umiam flyover

SHILLONG, March 17: The Iasnohlang Village Organization (IVO) Umroi Madan on Wednesday organised a clean-up drive at Umiam flyover which was widely participated by women self-help groups from Umiam area, under the aegis of the Community & Rural Development, Bhoirymbong Block.
According to a statement, the initiative also saw the convergence of resources from different government departments, viz. C&RD Block, CHC Bhoirymbong, Police, NHAI, MeECL and the Dorbars from the area.
“These women groups of the IVO were encouraged to pick up the litters thrown by passersby to observe and to celebrate the first birthday of the formation of the Iasnohlang Village Organization comprising 15 women’s groups,” the statement said.
The clean-up drive was attended by Ri Bhoi Additional Deputy Commissioner B Kharshandi and BDO R Brahma.
While Kharshandi emphasised upon the proverb ‘cleanliness is next to godliness’, Brahma urged the police to keep vigil to ensure cleanliness and also take action against people who haphazardly jettison rubbish in public places.
Following the clean-up drive, the Rangbah Shnong of Umroi Madan and the secretary of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong expressed gratitude to the women self-help groups and other volunteers.
