101 Area event for locals, students
SHILLONG, March 22: As part of the Swarnim Vijay Varsh, which is being celebrated across the country to mark the historic victory of the Indian Army in the Bangladesh Liberation War, the 101 Area will organise a weapons and equipment display- cum-awareness programme on ‘Know Your Armed Forces’ from March 25 to 27 at Polo Ground, Shillong. As part of the event, the Indian Army along with the Air Force and Assam Rifles will put on display weapons and equipment used by the Indian armed forces for students, NCC cadets and locals. Furthermore, a career guidance programme on how to join the Indian armed forces will also be organised for students and NCC cadets. The event will be held on March 25 for students and NCC cadets and on March 26 for the general public between 10 am and 4 pm.

Ban on polythene bags
TURA, March 22: The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB) has prohibited the use of polythene bags and plastic sheets used for packaging with thickness less than 50 microns. A statement in this regard informed that failure to comply with the order can entail imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 5 years or with a penalty which may extend up to Rs 1 lakh or with both. In case the failure or contravention continues, additional fine will be imposed, which may extend up to Rs 5000 per day.

Producer-consumer meet
SHILLONG, March 22: In a bid to facilitate farmer-buyer contact from domestic and international markets, the Directorate of Horticulture, Meghalaya, with support from APEDA, organised an export promotion conference-cum-buyer and seller meet on Monday. According to a statement, the meet was attended by buyers from different parts of the country, and exporters and farmers from Meghalaya. Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare department, Dr P Shakil Ahammed, said that the meet intends to build long-term relationships, which can lead to long-term partnership in production, quality improvement, export opportunities and better price realisation of products. He informed that the government has come up with various schemes to support buyers and farmers which include logistic support to farmers. “The Government of Meghalaya is also focusing on a concept on one cluster one product with focus on processing, logistics, value chain link and market link. Example, Ri Bhoi as a pineapple district, West Khasi Hills as a ginger district, South West Khasi Hills as a honey district and South Garo Hills as a jackfruit district,” he said.

Boost to kitchen gardening
NONGSTOIN, March 22: As part of the Poshan Pakhwada celebration in West Khasi Hills, the office of the District Programme Officer (DPO), held a meeting with other line departments on Monday in a bid to encourage kitchen gardens to grow vegetables healthy for consumption. During the meet, the DPO, B Nengnong, stressed on the need to identify anemic mothers and malnourished children, educate on nutritious food and eating habits for mothers and children, exercise and yoga et al. The meet was presided over by West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa.

Cross-country run
JOWAI, March 22: The District Administration and the District Social Welfare Officer, West Jaintia Hills, will organise a district-level Nasha-Mukt Bharat campaign marathon cross-country run on March 27 2021 for men and women (open category). The run will be flagged off from the main gate of Kiang Nangbah Stadium. Meanwhile, interested people have been urged to register on March 27 at 5.30 am at Kiang Nangbah Stadium. The winners of the marathon will be conferred with cash prize.
