NHAI gets deadline to revert to previous toll tax

JOWAI, March 22: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been served a week’s deadline by Jaintia Hills-based Joint Action Committee (JAC) to revert back to the toll fees of Rs 30 per day for tourist and private vehicles at Ialong in West Jaintia Hills as in the days prior to the implementation of FASTag.
The JAC — comprising All Jaintia Tourist & Commercial Vehicles’ Association, FKJGP, JSM, HYC, JYF, WJNC, JSU and HNPF — resolved to mount pressure on the NHAI after a public meeting at Hynniaw-mer on Monday, which was attended by leaders of various pressure groups, drivers and vehicles owners.
Soon after the meeting, members of the JAC thronged the Ialong toll plaza but were stopped by the police and magistrates.
However, they were later allowed to talk to the in-charge of the toll gate. The members then informed the official that a week’s deadline has been set to finalise the rate of tax imposed on vehicle owners/drivers.
The All Jaintia Tourist & Commercial Vehicles’ Association president, Paila Lyngkot, informed that the JAC will stick to the earlier rate which is Rs 30 per day for vehicles of Jaintia Hills.
“We will wait for the deadline to end. If the NHAI fails to fulfil our demand by then, we will take our next course of action”, he added.
