Sohra locality gets water project
SHILLONG, March 28: A drinking water-cum-washing area was on Saturday dedicated to Pdengshnong locality, Sohra, by the Rotary Club Shillong Heritage. The facility, which was inaugurated by the president of Rotary Club Shillong Heritage, Rtn Mrinal Barthakur, was built at a cost of Rs 1.20 lakh at Thieptwa, Pdengshnong, Sohra. More than forty households will benefit from this project. Speaking as the chief guest during a meeting in the Dorbar Hall of Pdengshnong, club president urged upon the people of the locality to take good care and maintain the water tank and the area around it. Others who spoke included the Headman of Pdengshnong, Sohra, Rap Sing Lyiam, in the presence of the secretary, Rotary Club Shillong Heritage, Rtn Binayak Dutta, executive members and residents of Pdengshnong. A song was also presented by Herman Majaw and his friends.
Assault of elderly man condemned
TURA, March 28: The Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association (MHWA) on Sunday strongly condemned the assault on an elderly man of the same community by a group of youths led by the president of the Hajong Students’ Union (HSU) recently. In a video which has already gone viral, the group of youths can be seen angrily raising their voices towards the man who is seated on a chair. The man is later forcefully led off outside and reportedly assaulted. “MHWA strongly condemns the assault of the elderly man by HSU president, Aditya Hajong, on the night of March 21. They have manhandled and tortured the senior citizen. The act is inhuman and shows their mentality towards the elderly which may misguide the youths and his followers,” the MHWA said.
Webinar on issues in geo-sciences
SHILLONG, March 28: A webinar on the ‘Issues and Challenges in Geological Sciences’ was organised by the Department of Geology, NEHU, in collaboration with Shillong Chapter, Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata, recently. A wide range of speakers deliberated on the topic during the course of the webinar. Prof. H Lamin, Pro Vice Chancellor, NEHU, spoke about the importance of Geological Sciences and to have more institutes to impart geoscience education in Meghalaya so as to understand Earth in a better way and the science behind complex earth processes. The keynote speaker, Krishanu Nath, Senior Geologist, Geological Survey of India (North-East Region), spoke about various issues related to the Geological Sciences. On the other hand, Prof. Devesh Walia discussed the challenges for the upcoming and budding geologists, which are critical for growth and development of the North East. He pointed out the 20 current challenges in the field of Geological Sciences, most importantly being Climate Change, Targeting new mineral deposits, Water Resource Management, Renewable Energy, CO2 capture and storage, harnessing geothermal energy.
Legal awareness event in EGH
TURA, March 28: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Garo Hills, organised a one-day legal awareness programme at Rongbinggre village across the Simsang river, where a large number of villagers including religious leaders, Nokmas and Sirdars participated. During the programme, Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) and the Secretary of the DLSA, Chisak G Momin, spoke at length on the importance of free legal services being provided to the under-privileged people. Legal Aid Counsel, Jan N Arengh, deliberated about Section 154 of the CrPC and First Information Report. Protection Officer of the District Child Protection Unit, Mamuni K Marak, highlighted the provisions of POCSO Act, 2012.

Tura, March 28: The Member Secretary of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority has informed that in view of the forthcoming GHADC elections and the Shad Suk Mynsiem festival, the National Lok Adalat, which was earlier scheduled to be held on April 10, has been postponed to 17 April. MP inaugurates college building
NONGSTOIN, March 28: Shillong MP Vincent H Pala, on Saturday, inaugurated the new building of St. Francis D’ Assisi College at Siejlieh village in West Khasi Hills. The college building was set up by the Franciscan Missionary Brothers of Northeast India to promote quality education among the youths of the district and Meghalaya as a whole. Speaking on the occasion, brother Herman Wanniang, Provincial of Franciscan Missionary Brothers of Northeast India, informed that the college was initiated in 2010, when the same building was shared with the Higher Secondary section. In his address, Vincent Pala, who was the chief guest on the occasion, expressed happiness in associating himself with the college, while exuding confidence that the initiative will benefit the local youths. He also recalled the contribution of the missionaries in promoting education in the state as well as the country. Pala urged the Franciscan Missionary Brothers to introduce technology in the college while assuring that he will assist the college in the process.
