GSU condemns ‘assault’ on youths
TURA, March 30: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Khasi Hills Zone, on Tuesday condemned the recent assault on youths from South West Khasi Hills at Golf Links in Shillong while asking the authorities to take the issue solemnly. “We strongly condemn the incident at Golf Links and stand in solidarity with the victims and offer our condolences to the bereaved family members. We also urge the concerned authorities to take the matter seriously so that justice can be served at the earliest,” general secretary of the Union, Fremiush D Sangma, said. Alleging that Golf Links has become a hub of many unlawful activities, the GSU has also demanded of the Police department to surveil the popular site.
Mawphor launches Garo weekly
TURA, March 30: The management of Khasi daily Mawphor has launched their first-ever Garo Daily titled Kosi Songbad on Tuesday at Tura Circuit House. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh launched the first edition in the presence of invited guests that included journalists, government officials, student organisation leaders and staff and management of Mawphor and Highland Post. Addressing the gathering, Singh said, “Media can highlight various activities of life including governance, livelihood, policy decisions, health and education, among others. The youths are facing a lot of dilemma over job insecurity and the media can highlight and give them a pedestal to air their grievances”. He noted that feedback from the public is very important and the media can play a crucial role on this issue.
Man convicted for raping minor
NONGSTOIN, March 30: A court in West Khasi Hills convicted one Bonrojesh Marwein on Tuesday for raping a minor and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment with a penalty of Rs 10,000. In an order, the Court of Session Judge, West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin, informed that Marwein committed the crime at his residence in Nonglang village, West Khasi Hills. The matter was reported to Nongstoin Police Station.
State gets more personnel in SF-10
TURA, March 30: The 36th batch of SF-10 passed out from the Armed Police Training Center at 2nd MLP Battalion Headquarters, Goeragre, West Garo Hills, on Tuesday.
Additional Director General of Police (L&O/TAP), I Nongrang, who attended the passing-out parade as the chief guest, congratulated the new recruits. She later presented trophies, medals and certificates to the best-performing cadets during the nine-month-long training period. Others who attended the passing-out parade at were West Garo Hills SP Dr Raghavendra Kumar MG, SF-10 Commandant JFK Marak, East Garo Hills SP Bruno A Sangma among others.
