NONGPOH, April 6: Rampant burning of forest, which is common in Meghalaya particularly during the period March-April, often has severe repercussions and also destroys the environment.
In one such incident recently, a house owned by Triphina Wanniang and Pynshailang Lyngkhoi at Umlur village in Jirang constituency was brought down to ashes along with a thatch which stored paddy rice, due to the rampant burning of forest by unknown persons.
On learning about the incident, members of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, on Tuesday, visited the village to offer a helping hand to the victims and donated 30 pieces of CGI sheets, two bags of rice, utensils, and clothes among other household items.
Vice president of FKJGP central body, Eldie Newton Lyngdoh, handed over the items to the victims in the presence of village headman P Thongni, and other members of the organsation.
The headman thanked the federation for the assistance to the affected family who were staying in a makeshift tent without any basic amenities after the incident.
