SHILLONG, April 9: After more than a year and half since the arrest of a watchman of Mawkhar Presbyterian Church for alleged involvement in siphoning off of church money to the tune of Rs 4.67 crore, the police have filed charge sheet against the ‘fraudster’, informed East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police in a statement issued here on Friday.
The fraudulent transactions, as per the case record, have been going on since 2013 but due to lack of oversight, the crime could only be detected in August 2019.
As per the complaint, the treasurer of the church is suspected to have been committing the fraud as he was entrusted with the post from 2009. However, the Church chowkidar, Allfas Bareh, a resident of Mission Compound, was arrested for aiding in the crime by depositing the money collected every Sunday from the members of the church at a public sector bank here.
The investigation will, however, continue to ascertain if there is any complicity of others in the crime, the statement said.
