Jail inmates COVID-free, for now

SHILLONG, April 23: Inmates in various jails across Meghalaya so far haven’t been affected by COVID-19 with all the inmates testing negative.
Informing this, Inspector General of Prisons, M Kharkrang on Thursday said that the new inmates are awaiting their test reports and will be allowed to mingle with other inmates if only they test negative for the virus.
He also informed that the jail authorities have barred the family members of the inmates from visiting jails for meets. “We have allowed the jail inmates to communicate with their family members by way of telephone calls,” Kharkrang said.
He also informed that they will exhort the government to vaccinate all the jail inmates.Earlier, Health Minister, AL Hek, also admitted the need to inoculate the jail inmates since they are highly susceptible to the virus.
“We will make arrangement for the special vaccination drive for the jail inmates,” Hek said.
