GSU for new laws to bar non-tribal participation in GHADC
TURA, April 27: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) from East Garo Hills on Tuesday urged the new executive committee (EC) of the GHADC led by CEM, Benedic R Marak, to take immediate steps to debar the non-tribals from participating in the autonomous council. In its memorandum submitted Benedic, the Union demanded that immediate steps be taken to frame rules and amend the Sixth Schedule so as to prevent non-tribals from participating in the council elections. The Union also sought the preparation of a separate electoral roll for the GHADC, which should comprise only Garos living in Garo Hills. Reminding that the employees of the GHADC are yet to be paid their salaries for 33 months, the GSU requested the newly formed EC to bring a solution to the grievances of the staff by releasing the pending salaries. Earlier, the New Tura Development Forum, GSU from Resubelpara, A’chik Association for Protection of Environment and Garo National Council had also expressed their dissent to Phulbari MLA SG Esmatur Mominin’s statement, expressing the need to amend the Sixth Schedule over non-tribal participation in the GHADC elections.
