Two COVID-19 cases in Schalke camp following attack on team
Gelsenkirchen, April 27: A Schalke player and backroom staff member tested positive for the coronavirus less than a week after the team was attacked by its own fans following relegation from the Bundesliga, the club said Tuesday. Schalke said a first round of PCR tests on Monday returned the two positive results for COVID-19. Both individuals are in quarantine and neither is showing any symptoms. All other PCR tests taken Monday were negative, but Tuesday’s training session was canceled as a precaution, the club said. Schalke’s hygiene measures were breached early last Wednesday when angry fans violently confronted the players and staff on their return from having relegation confirmed with a loss at Arminia Bielefeld. Team coordinator Gerald Asamoah told German broadcasters he saw a colleague lying on the ground being kicked. Media reports said some players were chased by fans. Schalke next plays Hoffenheim on May 8, four days before hosting Hertha Berlin in a game rescheduled because of an outbreak of COVID-19 at Hertha. (AP)
Mbappé set for Man City in CL following injury
Paris, April 27: Kylian Mbappe has shaken off a minor thigh injury and is fit to play against Manchester City in the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday. Mbappe came off with the injury near the end of PSG’s 3-1 win at Metz in the French league on Saturday, jeopardizing his chances of playing in the first leg at Parc des Princes. However, the 22-year-old will be in the squad for the match against City, with PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino saying Tuesday that left back Juan Bernat and reserve goalkeeper Alexandre Letellier are the only players missing. Mbappe, one of the world’s most talented players, has scored eight goals in this season’s Champions League. (AP)
Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann to replace Flick in Bayern
Munich, April 27: Bayern Munich hired Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann on Tuesday to replace the departing Hansi Flick starting next season. The 33-year-old Nagelsmann will move to Bayern on July 1 with a contract that runs through 2026. Bayern said it agreed to terminate Flick’s contract after he asked to be released early. Leipzig didn’t say how much it received as compensation from Bayern, but CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said the club was “successful in obtaining our financial goals.” Nagelsmann grew up near Munich and came through the youth system at another club in the city. “The position at FC Bayern is a unique opportunity for me. I would therefore like to thank Oliver Mintzlaff and the rest of the board at RB Leipzig for finding a solution with FC Bayern and making this possible for me,” Nagelsmann said. ‘Shooter Dadi’ Chandro Tomar contracts coronavirus
New Delhi, April 27: Octogenarian shooter Chandro Tomar, nicknamed ‘Shooter Dadi’, has tested positive for COVID-19 and admitted to a hospital due to difficulty in breathing. The Twitter page of the 89-year-old legendary shooter, hailing from the Baghpat village in Uttar Pradesh, posted the development. “Dadi Chandro Tomar has tested positive for coronavirus and has been admitted to a hospital due to breathing problem. God protect all – Family,” a tweet on her page read. Chandro was already 60-plus when she picked up the gun for the first time but went on to win many national competitionsShe is believed to be the oldest woman sharp shooter in the world. (PTI)
