TURA, May 8: North Garo Hills police on Friday evening rescued two labourers unharmed from the clutches of a criminal gang. The duo was abducted on Thursday around 3:30 am by three men armed with daggers and country-made guns.
The gang had entered a labourers’ camp where workers, who were engaged in a PMGSY road construction project, were asleep.
The camp, located at Chidaret, is approximately 10 km from Resubelpara.
The gang had allegedly kidnapped the workers and, later in the day, called up their families, demanding a ransom of Rs five lakh for their safe release.
North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Abraham T Sangma, said that search and rescue operations were immediately launched by the police as soon as they were informed about the abduction.
“By Friday evening, our operation teams managed to track down the kidnappers and rescued the two victims who were kept hidden inside a cave in a remote forest near Rongrong. Two of the kidnappers were arrested from the hideout while the third was picked up on Saturday from another location,” the SP said.
Four local-made guns were also seized, the official added.
It was also divulged that the arrested criminals are part of the same gang that was involved in the abduction of a trader from Assam at Dingok market, North Garo Hills, in January last year.
The apprehended kidnappers have been, meanwhile, identified as Rupen R Marak alias Togan (36) from village Nengsa Apal, Danseng G Momin (20) of village Sanima, and a 15-year-old boy.
