SHILLONG, May 9: The Meghalaya government has received a sanction for the Jowai Bypass for a cost of Rs 93 crore, according to an official from the PWD.
The six-kilometre long road would start from an area after four kilometre from Thadlaskein. This will allow people visiting Amlarem and Dawki to skip entering Jowai town.
Asked about the hefty cost for a mere six-kilometre road, the official said that the road would go through hills besides two bridges will also be constructed, which enhances the cost for building the project.  Reacting to a query about land acquisition, the official informed that the land acquisition for the project was done long before, while also informing that the department is looking to go for the bidding process at the earliest.
The proposed road is expected to benefit Jowai town the most as the place is largely congested.
Meghalaya is currently working on the idea of constructing more and more bypasses throughout the congested areas and towns since expansion of the roads is no longer feasible in many locations.
