SHILLONG, May 18: Agriculture Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh, and C&RD Minister, Hamletson Dohling, on Tuesday carried out an inspection and revived the vegetable wholesale markets at Umdiengpun, Hynriew Mer and Sangmeiñ, San Mer at Upper Shillong.
While the wholesale vegetable market at Umdiengpun will be run by San Shnong Youth Welfare Organisation (SSYWO), the one at Sangmeiñ will be run by the Agriculture department.
The decision to revive these two wholesale vegetable markets was taken in a bid to help the farmers sell their produce and also to prevent overcrowding.
While speaking to reporters after the inspection, Banteidor said that the area at Umdiengpun is tad large, which will be best suited to start the wholesale vegetable market. “The area at Sangmeiñ for the wholesale vegetable market, to be run by the department, is a bit smaller. But I feel that the two vegetable markets will provide a major relief to the farmers at the time when the state is going through a very tough situation due to the second wave of COVID-19,” Banteidor stated.
Meanwhile, Hamletson said the opening of these two vegetable markets will benefit a large number of farmers from areas like Pynursla, Sohïong and others.
“This initiative of the Agriculture department will enable to sell their agriculture produce and, at the same time, ensure safety of the farmers from COVID-19,” Hamletson said.
The officials who accompanied the two ministers include principal secretary of Agriculture department, Dr P Shakeel Ahmed, Mylliem BDO, PT Passah, and members of the different local village dorbars of the area.
