SHILLONG, May 21: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University, which is the first state university, will be inaugurated on January 21, coinciding with the celebration of Meghalaya’s 50 years of statehood.
The chief minister informed this after inspecting the construction work of the university on Friday.
Expressing satisfaction on the work progress, Conrad said, “Almost 80 per cent of the construction work is complete and we are hopeful that by October this year, the campus will be ready.”
He informed that the PWD has also been directed to complete the approach road to the university campus.
It may be mentioned that the university, located at Balalgre in South West Garo Hills, is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 16.96 crore. “The university will cater to the needs of technical as well as engineering courses,” the chief minister said.
“Next year, we will be celebrating 50th year of our statehood and coinciding with the celebration, we will dedicate 50 development initiatives to the people of our state. I am delighted that Captain Williamson Sangma University will also be part of this grand celebration,” the chief minister announced.
Tura MP, Agatha Sangma, and North Tura MLA, Thomas A Sangma, had accompanied Conrad for the inspection.
Inspection of college
The chief minister, in the later part of the day, also inspected the premier College of Architecture and Urban Planning, which is first of its kind in the North East, at Balalgre.
Informing that this institute will also be inaugurated next year, Conrad informed that directions have been issued to complete both the projects and commence classes from next academic year.
