SHILLONG, May 28: KHADC CEM Titosstarwell Chyne has beseeched Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, to allow broomstick and bay leaf growers to sell their produce at Mawiong Regulated Market, at least twice a week.
In a letter to Tynsong, Chyne said over and above conventional farming, many are also engaged in growing bay leaves and broomsticks.
Stating that bay leaves and broomsticks have been classified as agricultural produce and agro-forest produce respectively by the state government, Chyne said, “Harvesting of these products has been done in the months between March and April. Unfortunately, there is no designated market for the growers to sell their produce. This has been compounded by the lack of storage facilities in the villages; the products are susceptible to spoilage with the onset of the monsoon season, which may cause a huge loss to the growers.”
