DDMAs asked to be on alert

SHILLONG, July 3: With Shillong starting to witness moderate rainfall, although incessantly, the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) have been asked to remain alert and take necessary precautions whenever they are alerted about rainfall by the Indian Metrological department (IMD).
It may be mentioned that last year, seven people lost their lives in Shillong due to different rain-related incidents.
In September, two people lost their lives in a landslip at police reserve while five people lost their lives in a landslide in Laban.
From June 28 till July 3, Shillong has already received 108.2 mm of rainfall, Sohra has received 1,482.6 mm of rainfall while Umiam has received 89.7 mm of rainfall.
Only recently, cases of landslides and floods were reported from Chokpot and Gasuapara C&RD Blocks besides there were also reports about flash floods, which occurred between June 28 and 30 at South Garo Hills.
